What Does “Using the Appropriate Mode” Actually Mean?
What does it actually mean when someone says to use the “appropriate mode”?
Modes can sound much more complicated than they really are, especially when you’re trying to figure out how they relate to the key, the scale, and the chords you’re playing over.
In this lesson, I use a real musical example in the key of G to break down how I think about choosing and using modes.
You’ll learn how the major scale connects to the modes, why the chord you’re playing over matters, how Lydian and Mixolydian fit into the bigger picture, and how to think about a mode that coincides with a specific chord.
The goal isn’t just to memorize seven mode names. It’s to understand where those sounds come from and when they make musical sense.
🎸 Grab your bass and try the examples along with me.

This is good. Much appreciated. This in mind, I was wondering if you had, or could demonstrate, a melodic “modes” exercise? Something that utilizes the full shapes of different modes
Hey Brandon, sure thing check out this lesson where we talk about the triads shapes of each melodic minor mode.
