How to Turn One Scale Into New Bass Lines
Do you know your major scale, but still find yourself playing the same patterns and ideas over and over again?
In this lesson, I’ll show you how to take one familiar major scale and use it to discover completely new bass lines, phrases, and exercises.
Instead of always playing the scale straight up and down, we’ll experiment with choosing different notes, skipping notes, listening for phrases that catch our ear, and developing those ideas into something musical.
You’ll learn how to:
- Create different patterns from the same major scale
- Use the scale as a framework instead of just an exercise
- Listen for new phrases while you’re experimenting
- Stop and develop an idea when something catches your ear
- Combine new phrases with things you already know
- Use chromatic notes and inflections to add more personality
The goal is to realize that you don’t always need more scales, more exercises, or more information.
Sometimes you just need to explore what you already know differently.
