What’s going on guys? Check out this subtle technique that I often use when establishing grooves and adding just a little flair to my picking technique. I try to emphasize this technique even more when I’m playing solo without a drummer and or without a band. Just be mindful and careful of this technique because it can easily be overused. Hey Bass Nation! Hopefully you all are doing great! In this lesson I talk about the importance of hearing the difference between each mode. Not just diatonically. Sometimes we can get stuck in learning one way but it’s very crucial that we learn how to differentiate between the modes using the same root note. It can be a little confusing in the beginning but learning how to EQ your bass will pay off so much in the long run. Have you ever struggled with which knobs do what??? In the first part of this course we analyze different frequency methods along with different frequency types such as, graphic EQ, parametric EQ and also 3 band EQ. #BASSNATION In this week’s lesson I’ll be walking you through a Minor 7 Flat 5 chord and dig into how, when and where to play it. All of these types of chords sound cleaner on bass if you play the extended notes in a higher register on the bass. I personally like to use this chord as a substitution…grab your bass and dig in with me so you can wrap your fingers around this chord and learn some additional applications for the chord itself!

#BASSNATION In this week’s lesson I’ll be going over a quick exercise with you that is just simply going up an extended Mixolydian scale and then I’ve created a chromatic pattern on the way back down. I simply move this exercise back and forth from A to G and repeat it over and over. This is a great way to really increase your dexterity, but remember…as I always say, you want to make sure your notes are coming out clean, clear, and precise! Be sure to take this at your own pace and develop speed over time!

#BASSNATION In this week’s lesson I’ll be digging into and explaining the scale degrees of a 2-5-1. I’ll give you some example lines and ideas that may help you create more unique lines rather than always starting or stopping on the “one”. This is all about replacing the roots of your chords with a note 1 octave lower when and where you can when you are using a 5 string bass. The concept overall is pretty simple, but it takes you to the next step of thinking outside of the box, stretching, and getting comfortable with other fingering positions.

#BASSNATION In this weeks lesson I’m going to show you a great exercise to increase your speed and dexterity. The excercise will cover playing through a natural minor to locrian scale each played in the key of E. This is a great way for you to get all 4 fingers moving and increase your muscle memmory to ramp up your accuracy when you’re playing at high speeds.

As I always say, make sure each note is coming out clean, clear, and precise. Speed up as you get comfortable and not before. Also think about other ways to apply this excercise; different scales, different strings, different areas of the fretboard. Don’t ONLY take this exercise for exactly what I’m showing you, expand on it and create new exercises of your own to increase your speed and dexterity all around the fretboard.

This is one of those techniques bass players are constantly asking about, and it really does take a lot of experience to be able to perfect and teach double thumb slap bass.
