Homework Assignment

Pick a key (C major recommended).

Write down the major family modes (Ionian, Lydian, Mixolydian) and minor family modes (Dorian, Aeolian, Phrygian, Locrian).

Play each mode in sequence on your bass.

Create a 2-bar groove in each mode without changing position on the neck.

Identify at least one common chord tone shared between a major mode and a minor mode, then write a bass line connecting them.

And you could also change the minor 3rd to a dominant which would land nicely to the 6 chord… But now you’re moving away from diatonic stuff! Great lesson. I find this kind of practice to really open the mind but also it can give headaches lol
Ooooh, secondary dominant chords! 👌🏾 now you’re talking lol. Love it. We haven’t talked about that in a while, but doesn’t hurt to bring it back up. Oh yea, can definitely lead to headaches, that’s why I mentioned the “rabbit hole” in the beginning lol
