  1. This was very interesting and informative. I was impressed. As for undercutting other bass players; that’s a great discussion, and a bit of an ethical dilemma. I live in a small college town. There is a lot of good music here, but not necessarily a “pool” of musicians like in a city. But, there are a lot of bands. Most of the bands are formed by students that happen upon each other. There are quite a few venues (bars) in the town that hire bands. The same moral dilemma exists at the band level. To get heard a band will play very cheaply to land a gig in a bar. But, that means an established band that has been together and paid their dues so to speak lose that opportunity. The desire to play is strong, but you don’t want to undercut established bands. Perhaps a discussion on musician unions would be good. There is a musician’s union in town, but it is not really effective. To keep band prices higher like the union wants to do would likely result in the venues hiring more DJs etc. Well, this is more than I intended to post! But anyway, I really enjoyed listening to you and Calin in this podcast. Thank you!

  2. I never had any desire to be a professional musician; just wasn’t my thing. I learned a bit of keyboard, and was always interested in bass. (I’d completely forgotten that I had a grandfather who played double bass!) I have several family members who are really good musicians. One cousin who plays electric guitar had these aspirations of getting a song into the hands of a really well known R&B singer, and he thought that if he could just do that, he’d be “set”. Well, I’m old enough to be his father, and I’ve experienced a lot of “real life”, so I had to explain to my cousin that he would have to gain some exposure 1st by at least putting some music out freely. Without any type of “buzz” how would a person be able to get near someone who could catapult a career? It’s like some fighters say; “if you STAY ready, you don’t have to GET ready”.

Yes, I’m all for the working for free to get known. My bass playing consists of playing in church, and doing a few FB and YT vids, and that perfectly fine for me. As a teen, I encountered lots of selfish dudes who didn’t wanna show chords on keys, but lately I’ve found that more often than not, people today are more willing to help (bass and keys players). I help people periodically with song walkthroughs on keys when someone asks on YT, because it honestly makes me better, and most things that I learn in life have things that I can adapt to my bass learning.
