How to Tune With Harmonics
This is not only a tuning lesson, but an ear training lesson as well! Some people take advantage, or take for granted the fact that we can electronically tune our bass, and not have to worry about it. The best thing you can do as a beginner is to start training your ear and utilizing it as much as possible. Even with something as simple as tuning. It is a very simple lesson, but very useful. Check it out.

good lesson – so I’ve been tuning with harmonics a while; my question however is: are there rules around using harmonics? I mean, I don’t know when to place them when I’m playing a bass line….. are there rules of when to use, or what notes they build off of? I hope the makes sense…..Steve
Hey Steve, that’s a great question. I would say that I very rarely use harmonics inside of a bass line lol, but there are instances where certain songs such as “Portrait of Tracy” by Jaco Pastorius use harmonics as a huge element of the song. You would also normally hear them in a lot of natural note keys such E,C, G & D. Only because they’re certain notes that are produced by harmonics that work well within the overtones of those major keys. You can also combine certain harmonics to get major chords and minor chords as well. The only time I can honestly say I would naturally use harmonics as if I’m in the key of E or if I’m in the key of C. (I’ll show a demonstration of this inside of a video and also go more in depth with your question visually, so stay tuned for that. Will most likely be uploaded in the morning) But again, that’s very rare.
great answer – thanks bro.
hey man thanks so much for your breakdown of harmonics in the live session. I wasn’t able to be on at 3today but I caught the replay in the evening….. you are a good teacher and make things very understandable. thanks again.
Hey man! Glad you were able to catch the live stream. My pleasure! Someone in the live stream suggested that I create a course on harmonics so that is coming soon as well, should be pretty interesting🤟🏾
