I get that the keys have different intervals making it major or minor, but what makes a mode major or minor?
Good question, a simple way to look at it is to examine the triads for each mode(1st, 3rd, 5th notes of the mode). The third scale degree of each is going to determine wether it’s major or minor. (Major 3rd interval vs minor 3rd interval). Hope that makes sense
so a major mode has 4 half steps from root to the 3rd and a minor has 3 half steps from root to third?
Correct!
